MHS Athlete of the Month

The MHS athlete of the month for September is senior Girls Varsity Soccer player Marcia Voigt. She plays center-mid and has been on the school's varsity team for all of her four years of high school. Marcia has been playing soccer for about 12 years and really enjoys the sport. In just five games so far this season, Marcia has scored three goals and has had four assists. She is a deserving recipient of this month's title.

Marcia was first introduced to the game of soccer by her father. Her older sister was already playing soccer, and so her father included Marcia in the practices. Since then Marcia has grown to be an exceptional athlete. Not only does she participate in soccer, but she also plays basketball in the winter and is on the track and field team in the spring.

Marcia intends to go to play competitive basketball in college, but hopes that she will be able to play soccer next year as well. For now, she has her eyes set on doing well in this, her last year at Montgomery High.

"I want to do everything I can to help," Marcia stated. " Just to be a part of the team." Marcia believes that the team will undoubtedly do their best and play their hardest this season, proving itself every game. Hopefully it will be enough so that they can make it to the county tournament or even states.

Marcia's favorite thing about being a member of the varsity soccer team is how close the players are with one another. " We all have each other's backs," Marcia claimed. "We're all there for each other, both on and off the soccer field." To Marcia, her biggest accomplishment while on the team is just being there for the group and putting her heart and soul into the game. She feels that being a member of this team, and the game of soccer in general, has made her a better person. She has become more competitive and has learned the benefit of hard work. She is more sociable with her peers, and most importantly, she has matured as a person. Marcia's message to all the fans is to come out and support the team by cheering them on this season.

The Central Jersey Fever AAU girls - 10 U basketball team, comprised of girls from Montgomery Township, Robbinsville, and South Brunswick, concluded their season with a fourth place finish in the AAU New Jersey State Tournament. Their finish qualified them for the AAU Division 1 National Tournament.

Zojajha Ayub and Zoee D'Costa, both from Montgomery Township were part of this newly formed team, which competed against some of the best 10U teams in the state. The Fever lost in their semi final round to the Central Jersey Hawks, and competed against teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey in numerous tournaments during the season. Congratulations to the team.

MHS Fall Sports Roundup - October

As the start of the new school year begins, everyone is getting ready for the new season, including the sports teams. Beginning around the middle of August, each fall team prepares for a brand new season. They train and practice hard so that every one of their athletes will be ready when the first game arrives. When these teams have their sights on victory, nothing can stop them.

The varsity football team has been working to maintain their reputation after last year's amazing season. According to Mr. Zoran Milich, head coach for the past nine years, many of the athletes have been practicing over the summer as well as during the pre-season.

"Our motto this season is 'Rebuild or Reload!'" stated Coach Milich. "I believe we can have a successful season, because as a whole this has been the hardest working team in the off-season we have ever had. If we played like we trained we'll do well but we still have to play the games to find out. There is great senior leadership which has become a staple in the football program. This team has the ability and talent to make it back to the state play-offs if it stays healthy."

The main goal of the team is to continue the success of last year and possibly make it to the playoffs. This is no small task though, especially with the loss of some of their best players from last season. Fortunately returning running back JT Tartacoff, wide receiver Andy Singely, inside linebacker Mike Haderer, and defensive end and placekicker Mathys Mesters are doing a great job leading the team. All four of these athletes will be three-year starters this season. Andy, Mike and Mathys were All-Conference last year and JT was All-State. The only thing that Coach Milich asks of all the athletes this season is that they play their best and be as good as they can be.

There will be big changes this season for the boy's varsity soccer team, with the help of their new coach Mr. Rickey Steeb. When asked what changes he would bring to the team, Coach Steeb stated, "I'm going to try some new concepts. We want to play an exciting style of soccer here in which everyone is involved. It's going to be a fast and physical game."

His expectations for the team include working hard, have a winning season, and maybe even make it to the county and state championships. There is a great opportunity for success this season with a handful of fresh young talent.

The nine seniors on the team, including senior captains Sal Ghodbane, Alex Seamon, and AJ Shadrach, are expected to be key assets in leading the team to victory. But Coach Steeb's biggest hope for the team is that they come together as a team this year and to try their best to win.

The girl's varsity soccer team is just as excited for their new season. With the help of their coach of ten years, Mr. Jeremy Beardsley, the team just might be able to continue the success they have had for the past few years. Even with the loss of last year's seniors, who included some of their best athletes, with a lot of effort and teamwork, they can still pull out a great season. "We have a great amount of talent among the seniors on the team," stated Coach Beardsley. "There are twelve in total and they each bring something to the team. We have lots of strength in starter Alex Vazquez, and our goalkeeper Ally Mancino is one of the best in the state." Coach Beardsley just hopes that the younger athletes will show as much effort and spirit as the seniors. To work off of the success from past years, the team hopes to have a great run this season which may include making it to the Skyland Conference and County Finals.

Another team that is pumped up and ready to go is the girl's varsity field hockey team. Lead by Coach Tiffany Trockenbrod, the team is hoping to have a winning season. The team's record for last year was 2-15-1. Coach Trockenbrod has high expectations for this year's squad. "We are still a young program," Trockenbrod stated. "We graduated five starting seniors last year, so young players have to fill some big roles."

Some of the returning players from last year and current seniors are Liz Coffey, Allie Whitelaw, Erin Perotti and Marissa McCredie, but according to Coach Trockenbrod the team's top newcomers are juniors Tina Mazzeo and Christina Hartnack. With these girls the group intends to have a great season, but most importantly have fun.

Finally, the girl's cross country team is hoping to continue their two-year undefeated streak. Coach for twenty plus years, Mr. James Goodfriend, had this to say about the team. "We had a turn out of about 22 girls this year which is a pretty good number. Even will the loss of two great athletes, Amanda Herman and Rachel Holt, we still have a lot of great talent. Jillian Prentice is by far the best runner I've seen in a long time. She was county champion last year, is among the top five runners in the state and among the top twenty in the nation. Also we have great strength in juniors Danielle Baginsky and Lara Shegoski, as well as seniors Laura Noisten and Nora Heck. Most of last year's team came back, with only one newcomer. Hopefully more will join later on, but for now we just have to work our hardest."

The team's main goal is to win the division title, but they also hope to make it to states as well. Coach Goodfriend's biggest advice to the team is to stay in shape and to have fun.

It seems that each team is ready in its own way for the new sports season. Every team has their individual goals and legacies which makes them unique to the school. Montgomery has always had a great athletics program, and this will certainly be the case for this season. So come on out this fall, cheer on your young athletes while supporting these teams and the community.

MHS Athlete of the Month - JT Tartacoff

This month's MHS Athlete of the Month is Varsity football player J.T. Tartacoff. J.T. has been playing tackle football for eleven years now. He has been on the MHS varsity football team for three years now. Though the team has only played a combined total of nine games, J.T. has already scored seven touchdowns, made nine receptions, and made 58 carries. Though his favorite position is receiver, he plays multiple positions on both offense and defense. Making him one of the most well rounded athletes on the team.

J.T. first got into playing football because he enjoyed the speed of the game. How the players never stopped moving. He started playing flag football at age 10, but then began tackle football at age eleven.
Not only does J.T. play football, he also enjoys playing baseball. H played for the school up until last year. This spring J.T. wants to indulge himself in Lacrosse and see how that goes. He hopes to go to college on a football scholarship, hopefully for a division I school. His favorite athlete is famous cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. " All he's been through is just incredible" J.T. stated. " He is a real hard worker with a lot of determination, and with the support of his family was able to overcome all odds and win seven tour de France titles."

J.T. feels that his biggest accomplishment on the team thus far, is just being able to do whatever he can to help the team win.

"He wants to help the team win no matter what the cost," said head coach for the Varsity football team Zoran Milich. " J.T. is a tremendous athlete, he is very unselfish and a drive to win."

J.T's favorite part about being a member of the MHS varsity football team is the comradely. "We're all friends on the team," he remarked. "The entire season is full of great games. Whether it is on or off the field, we all have lots of fun."

J.T. says that football has helped him to realize that one person isn't enough, that you need the entire support of the team to succeed. His hope for next year is to possibly go undefeated, help lead the team, but most importantly to have a good time.

MHS Fall Sports - November

A month into the new school year, students have never been more pumped up for the start of the fall athletics season. Whether it is the athletes or the fans, everyone seems to be excited to see the sports teams in actions. From football to cross country, the fall teams are at their best. Almost all the teams this seasons have a winning record. All the coaches, new and old, seems to have high hopes for all the athletes in pursuit of the conference title and beyond.

In football, the varsity team is ahead with a record of 3-2. So far they have lost against Ridge 0-10 and Immaculata 7-30, but won against North Hunterdon 41-13, Voorhees 34-0 and Monroe 16-6. Their biggest win of the season was their win against Monroe. "We were favored to lose according to all the papers," claimed head coach Zoran Milich. "But we pulled out a big win despite the fact that the odds were against us."

With that win, it gave the MHS Cougars their 500th win since the team first began. It was a big honor not only for coach Milich and his team, but the town of Montgomery. "We still need to stay healthy," Mr. Milich stated. "We need to get better at the little things, it's things like that that can win or lose a game."

Coach Milich is hopeful that the team will continue their success throughout the season. With the help of J.T. Tartacoff, their primary source of offense with seven touchdowns already this season, Mike Haderer their main defender with 53 tackles, and the rest of the team, they are felling a lot better than they did one month ago before the season started.

In boys varsity soccer, they also have a winning record of 8-3-2. They had a lot of great games so far this season and are hoping to tack on a few more wins before the state tournament begins. They recently had a huge 3-2 win over the school's rival, the Hillsborough Raiders. "It was definitely the best game so far this year," head coach Rick Steeb quoted. "Manny Pastorello, who is currently leading the teams in goals and is one of the top goal scorers in the conference, scored three goals all three goals in the game for a hat trick."

Sophomore, Matt Wiltse who leads the team in assists, also had a great game with two assists. The current goal of the team is just to continue to improve, work hard, and prepare for the tournament. "Our final games are going to be tough," the coach claimed. "We need to play well to win, so that we can go far in the tournament."

The girls varsity soccer team is having one of their greatest seasons in the team's history. They have are undefeated so far this season with a record of 11-0-1. They recently had a game against Bridgewater and their team. If they had won they would have clinched the conference.

"We could have played better," admits girl's head coach Jeremy Beardsley. "We did however do an excellent job. To come out of Bridgewater with a tie is remarkable."

Junior, Olivia Lang, scored her first goal of the season and the team's only goal of the game. Though the team is in a very good position for the post-season., they still need to work hard in order to succeed. "There will be a lot of teams gunning for it." Stated Mr. Beardsley. "We just need to keep playing some good soccer and we can do really well.

The boys cross-country team, even though they have a losing record of 2-3, they are still giving everything they have to succeed. They have two great consistent runners in sophomores Fred Kobylarz and Nick Solozo. They have an excellent work ethic and really are the base of the team," stated head coach Jennifer Riddell. "This is great for the future success of the program as a whole."

Other strong runners on the team are Senior Derek Moore, and Juniors Nick Warner, Ray Ramono, and Skylar Kelly. The freshman are also excelling, coming in third at the Old Bridge Class meet. With the team's next meet against Somerville, coach Riddell hopes the team is able to go 500 for the season. "I believe that we are much stronger than last year," she claimed. "If we can stay injury free with our top seven runners we can do it."

The girls cross-country team is currently doing really well with a record of five wins and one loss.
Junior Jillian Prenitce is apparently really excelling thus far in the season winning both the Bernie McGee junior championship and the Old Bridge Class Championship. Other runners that are really adding to the team are juniors Lara Shegoski,, Dani Baginsky, Katie Manfredi and senior Nora Heck.
"We as a team are rated at the 21st best team in NJ," stated Girls' head coach Jim Goodfriend. "We are traveling to the Brown University Northeastern Invitational this weekend in Rhode Island. We hope to place high as a team in the race."

So as the marking period comes to an end, the sports teams are pulling out all the stops. It is easy to see that these athletes are determined to go far this year no matter what it takes. Who knows how far they will go this season? Perhaps all the way to the state finals! But for now, their goal is just to do the best they can with the time they have left.

MHS December Sports Roundup

As the first marking period comes to an end, so does the fall sports season at MHS. All the fall sports teams had a fantastic season. Whether it was football or soccer, every athlete played his or her hardest all the way to the end. For the senior competitors, this was their last season. This was their season to shine, and the experiences that came with it won't soon be forgotten by anyone.

The varsity football team had an unfortunate year to a number of injuries. "I'm sure that without the injuries," claimed head coach Zoran Milich, "we could have made the state playoffs. The team worked really hard both in the off season and during practice." Even with the injuries, the team was still able to pull out a good number of wins this season to end with a total record of 4-6. Their final game was a playoff game where the team sadly lost to Manalapan 3-8. Some big contributors to the team this season we're seniors Mike Haderer, Mathys Mesters, Tyler Manna, Frank Rubino, Pat Kondorossy and Captain Andy Singly. Other members who had an exceptional year were juniors J.T. Tartacoff, Chris Smyth, and John Hakanson. "We had outstanding senior leadership this year," noted Coach Milich. "We have a total of twenty three seniors leaving this year, so we're going to need the rest of the team to really step it up." The team's foals for next year are to make it to the playoffs and maybe even win the state sectional championship.

The girls varsity soccer team had an extraordinary season, making it all the way to the state sectional championships where they regrettably lost 0-1. On the brighter side, the teams final record was an incredible 19-1-1. "The team did remarkably well," exclaimed head coach Jeremy Beardsly. "One of the best year's we have ever had." To Mr. Beardsly, there was no one player that was the reason for the team's success. To him it was a team effort. "Many players stepped up this year," he stated. "It is a team without any stars." Sadly the team will be losing thirteen seniors this season, which is all the more reason for the younger athletes to get ready. Next season the team will try to do the same as every year, to win championships.

The boy's varsity soccer team had one of their best seasons to date. At the end of the season they were second in the conference, made the state tournament, and had an ultimate record of 10-8-2. " We had a god season," claims head coach Rickey Steeb. One of the main contributors to the team's accomplishment this season was senior Manny Pastorello, leading the team with thirteen goals and eight assists. Another big player this season was senior Sal Ghodbane, who had an amazing season as the team's center back. "With nine seniors leaving this year," coach Steeb remarked, "the younger guys need to step up and work hard."

The girl's cross-country also had a great season going 5-1 for the year. "The team won two invitationals, stated head coach Jim Goodfriend. "We placed third in Somerset County, fifth in the Skyland Conference meet and 6th in Central NJ Group IV." The team is full of strong, well-trained athletes, each one brining their own contribution to the team. Junior Jillian prentice is always a solid runner and has won multiple championships as a member of the team, but unlike the seniors on the team, she will be back next year. "We need to work hard in the summer and come back in good shape," coach Goodfriend commented. "We need to replace the seniors that are graduating. Especially Nora Heck, Laura Noisten and Laura Key."

The team's goal for next season is to go undefeated and win invitationals as well as championships.

Finally, the boys cross-country team did not do as well as they had hoped with a closing record of 2-4. The team did improve form last year, a higher place in the state meet and more wins than last season. The team needs to start the season in shape," said head coach Jennifer Riddell. "More mileage needs to happen in preseason so that we are not using the actual competitions to get in shape but to compete." The team certainly has great potential; they just need to utilize it to their advantage. Some strong runners among the group are sophomores Mike Stanley and Fred Kobylarz, each running a fantastic season. "We are losing four seniors this season," claimed coach Ridell. "Derek Moore, DJ Bilisky, Dan Shen and Pat O'Donnell. Good guys with a lot of heart and work hard. The team will miss them and wishes them well."
Winter is just around the corner, bringing snow holiday decorations and a whole new set of sports teams. The winter sports teams will soon begin their season, hoping to win as many games, meets and competitions as possible while still having fun.

As for the fall sports teams, overall it was a great season and best of luck goes out to all of the senior athletes as they prepare to leave for college. For both sports teams and seniors, the road ahead will be rough, but in the end the experience is always worth the trip.

MHS Athlete of the Month - December 2008

The MHS athlete of the month for November is Girls Varsity Cross Country runner, Jillian Prentice. Jillian has been a runner for the past six years. Recently she came in first at the Somerset county championships, helping her team win third place. Jillian is the team's captain and with her support, the team has a season record of five wins and one loss. She has been ranked one of the top runners in the state and is a very worthy recipient of this title.

Jillian became interested in cross-country running through her parents, both of who are runners themselves. She says that she is really inspired by her dad, who encourages and always pushes her to do her best. Jillian feels that her greatest accomplishment as a member of the team has been being named captain. "It's a really big honor for me," Jillian stated. She feels being able to help lead the team is a great experience. According to Jillian, she not only has a lot of fun with cross-country running, but it has also taught her time management skills, the importance or teamwork, and determination.

"Jillian had a great season," says Jim Goodfriend, head coach for the girl's varsity cross-country team. "She went undefeated in dual meets for the second year. She won four individual championships (Bernie McGee Invitational, Brown Invitational, Old Bridge Classic Invitational, and Somerset County Championship). She placed fourth in the Skyland Conference Championships, fourth in Central Jersey Group IV and qualified to run in the State championship."

In Jillian's opinion, the girl's varsity cross-country team had a successful season. "People really stepped up," she stated. "We had a few injuries and that set us back, but we had a lot of support from the team. Nora Heck especially had an amazing year." Jillian says that her favorite part of the team is how well the team gets along with one another. "We area all good friends," she remarked about her teammates. Jillian hopes to continue to run cross-country in college, and as for next year, she just wants to improve her running times and most of all have fun.

Wildcat Pee Wees Finish Year With Big Win

The Montgomery Wildcat Pee Wees finished the year on a hi note as they defeated the Kenilworth Bears 20-0. It was the squads third win of the season and 2nd defensive shutout. The Monty ground game got things going in the first half behind excellent blocking by Chris Chick, Matt Spallucci, Brett Ajamian, Michael Fidanzato and Daniel Papa. Monty took a 6-0 lead when Guy Depersia broke loose for a 60 yard touchdown run. Monty increased their lead to 12-0 just before halftime when quarterback Joey Ditorrice went over from the 1 yard line. Montys defense came up big all day with key tackles by Chris Chugunov, Joey Ditorrice, Devin Meadows, and two interceptions by Nico Rembert. Monty closed out the scoring when Trevor Schmidt scored on a 40 yard run and the two point conversion was added by Joseph Gallagher.

Montgomery Varsity Cheerleaders Lauded At Skyland Championship

Alyssa Braun and Danielle Gleason, two Montgomery senior cheerleaders, received special awards at the Skyland Conference Championship on November 2 at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.

Both girls were named to the NJCDCA All-State team which fosters safety, sportsmanship, education and support to all New Jersey High School cheerleaders.
Braun, a captain of the squad, was named to the highly coveted Skyland's First-Team All Conference squad which is judged on cheerleading skills. This marks Braun’s third year in a row of being selected for All Conference honors.

“Beyond their tremendous athletic talents, they are wonderful role models for our underclassmen and will certainly leave a huge hole in our cheerleading family next year,” said Amy Nowalinski, head coach of the varsity squad.

Additionally, the Montgomery varsity cheerleading squad earned second place in the Delaware West Division at the championship cheerleading competition. Nowalinski said placing in the competition is a testament to how hard the cheerleaders have worked for the past several years to make a name for themselves among some of the nationally ranked cheerleading teams that make up the Skyland Conference. The second place victory in a competitive division was a huge leap in that direction, said Nowalinski who added that it proved to the girls, their friends and family, and the entire cheerleading community that their hard work and dedication are finally paying off. “This is a huge accomplishment for us and I'm so proud of and happy for the girls,” said Nowalinski.

Montgomery’s varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders will take the mat next at the UCA Regional competition in Toms River on November 23.

Monty Hoops Completes Second Season

On Paper Champs Cruise to First Title

As the youngest team in this year’s league, On Paper Champs would not be intimidated. Comprised primarily of 08’ High School grads, this years champs were anything but just “On Paper” champions. They took the Monty Hoops title in just their first year in the league and did so in impressive fashion.

The second season of Monty Hoops, the Adult Summer Basketball league in Montgomery, was once again comprised of teams made up of Monty alum’s and residents. This year’s games were held on Wednesday evening at the MHS gymnasium. The eight game regular season ended with

#1 seeded and undefeated Princeton Radiology falling to # 4 seeded National Pools in the first round of the playoffs. In the other playoff match up, On Paper Champs, the #2 seed defeated #3 seed Donahuehomes.com. The season culminated with a 40-31 final, as On Paper Champs took down National Pools.

In the finals, OPC was led by Matt Kovac’s 15 points, as well as some stellar defense by Kevin Dougherty and Brian Taylor. National Pools, runner ups for the second straight season, were led by Cliff William’s 14 points.
