MHS Athlete of the Month - May 2010

The MHS athlete of the month for May is boys varsity lacrosse player Connor Oltmans. He plays defense and long stick midfield and is an integral part of the team as one of this year’s captains. Connor has been playing lacrosse for four years and really enjoys the sport. He is a deserving recipient of this month’s title.

Connor was introduced to the sport by his little brother, who started playing at a young age. He decided to give lacrosse a try after his brother convinced him to give it a shot, and he has been playing ever since. “I love lacrosse because it is very free flowing and I get the opportunity to put my aggression to good use,” Connor explained. “The Montgomery lacrosse team is awesome. There are so many great personalities and funny moments that I will never forget. It's also nice to be around a bunch of guys that want to win as badly as I do.”

Connor’s biggest accomplishment in lacrosse so far has been winning the county championship in 2009. “That was really special and showcased how well we could play as a team. It also added to the strong Montgomery lacrosse reputation,” Connor stated.

He hopes to continue accomplishing goals as the 2010 season continues. The team’s goals for this season are to win a state championship and to make it to this year’s Tournament of Champions, and Connor feels that he, along with the rest of the team, has what it takes to achieve these goals through hard work and dedication.

Connor is not only dedicated to playing lacrosse. He is a member of the MHS football team, playing mainly linebacker as well as various other positions. He was named to several all-area, all-county teams for football and was also named as captain for the upcoming fall 2010 season.
Connor plans on continuing to play lacrosse beyond high school. Although he is only a junior, he has committed to playing at a Division I school after his graduation in 2011. Connor is looking forward to the next chapter in his lacrosse career, stating “I am very excited to play at the next level for a top 20 team.” Connor is sure to display many more accomplishments in lacrosse throughout high school and into college.

MHS Spring Sports Roundup - July_August 2010

Along with the end of another school year comes the end of the spring sports season at Montgomery High School. Many of the teams had seasons extended well into June because of the success that they had, which provided for a great way to end the year.

The boys lacrosse team finished their season with a record of 13-8 and finished 15th in the state. The team had an intense schedule throughout the season, playing against nationally ranked teams both in and out of New Jersey. This enabled the boys to become stronger players; they had their first wins in MHS history over Hunterdon Central and Moorestown, and Mark Yetter became the second leading scorer in school history. Coach Don Green commented on the improvements that the team has made, stating, “The way that we handled this type of challenge was a large step forward for our program. The boys were able to handle a shift from beating every team by ten goals to playing big games every game, which is a massive test for any competitor.” As a result, there is definitely more success to be had by the MHS boys lacrosse team in the coming years.

The girls lacrosse team finished with a record of 13-8 as well, which exceeded their goal of having a 12-win season. Junior Kaila Sommi stated, “This year was a big step for our program. We got further than we ever have before in both states and counties. We also had a winning season for the first time.” Although the seniors were integral parts of the team, much of the success may have stemmed from the lowerclassmen, which sets Coach Tiffany Trockenbrod and the girls lacrosse team up for even more growth in the program in the coming years.

The softball team had a final record of 25-4, which included a win against the number one seeded team in the state. “The win against the number one team in the state was awesome, and we won our conference which was exciting too,” senior Julie Smith stated. “We also beat the school record for the most wins in Montgomery history which was something we didn’t even think of accomplishing in the beginning of the season.” Although many strong seniors are graduating this year, the girls and Coach John Rooney look forward to advancing even more next season.

The baseball team also finished strong with a record of 17-9. Senior pitcher Josh Prevost stated, “We had a monumental year this past season. There was a collective effort from all of our players and it’s a season none of us will soon forget.” In addition to winning a county championship for the first time since 2003, each player made some personal gains as well. Coach Pete Mueller and the rest of the team are very proud of their accomplishments and hope that this season is only the beginning of great things for the baseball team.

The girls golf team finished with a record of 12-4, making this their fourth winning season in a row. Although three of the strongest golfers on the team are seniors, the girls, along with Coach Jennifer Jones, feel confident that they can have more winning seasons in the future. “Overall we had a great season and the future for the team looks really good,” senior Paige Brach stated. The girls accomplished their main goal of making it to state sectionals, which set the stage for even more successes along the way. The boys golf team and Coach Joe Bassford also had a winning season, finishing with a record of 12-5.

The boys tennis team finished their season as county champions, conference champions, and state sectional champions, and with a record of 18-2. “Our success hadn’t been achieved in MHS tennis since 1999 and we finished our season ranked in the top ten for just the third time in school history,” senior Mike Goldman stated. With the help of Coach John Arnold, the team had one of the strongest seasons out of all the spring sports this year.

The girls track team also won many championships and had an undefeated record of 6-0. This was Coach Jim Goodfriend’s last year coaching girls track after over 30 years of being a coach, and he was extremely proud of his team’s accomplishments. Senior Laura Ng stated, “I think our biggest accomplishment was beating Hillsborough in the dual meet against them and then again at the County and Conference Championships, because we had lost to them in the relays in the beginning of the season. We had an incredible season and it was a good way for Coach Goodfriend and the seniors to go out.” Two girls also placed first at the Meet of Champions, which has never been done in MHS history. Sophomore Addy Sonaike placed first in the triple jump and junior Fiona Paladino placed first in the high jump, which added to the list of successes that the girls track team achieved.

The boys track team finished with a record of 4-1-1, marking this as one of their strongest seasons. The 4x100 team placed fourth at the Meet of Champions, which was a huge feat. Additionally, many boys placed in State Sectionals and qualified for the state championship, including Rob Weimer in the high jump and Robbie Robinson in the 100m. There is a lot of young talent on the team as well, so Coach Milich and the boys are looking forward to more winning seasons in the future.

Clearly this has been one of the strongest seasons in MHS history as each team was able to finish with a winning record. Although the spring sports have ended and summer is underway, MHS looks forward to a new group of athletes during the upcoming fall season.

MHS Athlete of the Month - July/Aug 2010 - Kyle Wernicki

The MHS Athlete of the Month for July is senior baseball player Kyle Wernicki. He plays centerfield and has been playing the sport for 14 years. This season, Kyle had 43 hits, a .512 batting average, 10 home runs, and 42 runs batted in. He is a deserving recipient of this month’s title.

Kyle was first introduced to a form of baseball when he was just four years old playing tee-ball, and he has grown into a passionate ball player. Beginning at a young age was able to shape his love for the Montgomery baseball team. “It’s fun getting to play with the same kids since we were in little league. We all have worked hard at baseball our whole lives and we play well together,” Kyle stated.

The strong bond between players provided Kyle and the rest of the team with one of their best seasons yet. They won the Somerset County Championship for the first time since 2003, which was an exciting moment for everyone. Kyle personally accomplished great things this season as well. He had three home runs in a game against Hunterdon Central, one of which tied the game at three in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Kyle has also grown to love the sport because of the logistics that are included in each game. “Baseball is a mental game,” Kyle explained. “Every play in the field you need to be thinking what the situation is and what to do if the ball is hit to you. Every time you are at bat, the pitcher is playing mind games with you, trying to disguise what pitch he is going to throw and in what location.” Kyle has certainly been able to master these mental challenges this season. He was able to break two school records with his 42 hits and his .512 batting average, which were both huge feats.

Kyle has not signed to play baseball at any colleges next fall; however, he is attending Virginia Tech and is considering joining the team there. Kyle’s talent is sure to get him far in baseball for the future and he deserves to be recognized for his great accomplishments this season.

USTA Middle States Honors Best - Three winners from NJ

United States Tennis Association Middle States (USTA MS) is set to honor the section's best from the 2009 calendar year at its Awards Ceremony and Annual Meeting. Three of the 18 award winners, Nassau Racquet & Tennis Club (Skillman), Jeff Holman (Haddonfield) and Judith Davidson Vogt (Princeton), are from New Jersey.

Nassau Racquet & Tennis Club
The Nassau Racquet & Tennis Club (Nassau) is being awarded the section's Organization of the Year (commercial) Award. It opened its doors to the public in January 1971. The indoor club was designed and built by Benton Camper, a life-long tennis player and amateur champion. Due to the New Jersey weather, Camper decided to take on the dilemma of having nowhere to play tennis for seven months out of the year. Situated on 12 acres in Skillman, N.J., Nassau has evolved in to one of the area's premier tennis facilities, offering year-round opportunities for improving, competing and socializing.

2009 was a year of transition and growth for Nassau, which opened the doors to a striking new addition featuring four new indoor courts complete with locker rooms, a fitness center, meeting rooms and viewing area. The new courts bring the clubs total to ten indoor courts offering programs for players of all ages and abilities, from children under the age of 10 to tournament tested adult players.

In 2009, Nassau hosted 11 USTA sanctioned junior level tournaments. In addition to junior programs and instruction, the facility offers numerous programs and leagues for adults including 12 teams in the popular Central Jersey Women's Travel League which pits Nassau's best against area clubs. The facility also plays host to 11 USTA League teams in men's, women's and mixed formats including the 2009 USTA Middle States New Jersey District Champions 4.5 men's team.

MHS Spring Sports Roundup - June 2010

As the school year wraps up, the spring sports teams are focusing on completing their seasons successfully. Each team has been continuously working to achieve their season goals.

The boys lacrosse team has shown their strength thus far through their impressive team standings. They are currently seeded third in the Somerset County Tournament and ranked first in Group One. The boys have defeated teams such as Moorestown and Hunterdon Central, marking the first time they have been able to beat these tough teams. Additionally, they are ranked in the top 20 in New Jersey.

Coach Don Green stated, "We just hope to show continued progress to our goals. This is what will ultimately make us successful. The joy and value of the season comes from the journey and not the destination. While our goals for the end of the season are lofty we are currently very successful because of the way our guys have responded over the course of the season. We are developing into a great team, and that is what really matters."

The dedication of the boys lacrosse team is evident in their performance and the outcome of their season looks strong considering the success they have had thus far.

The growth of the girls lacrosse program has shown throughout their impressive season. They have exceeded all other MHS girls lacrosse teams in the past by making it to the semifinal round of counties. Unfortunately they lost to Pingry in a close game; however, their dedication was shown throughout the game. The girls were able to make it to states where they hope to be ready to perform their best. Coach Tiffany Trockenbrod and the girls still have other goals to reach, hoping to achieve their long-term goal of having a 12-win season. All-in-all, this year's girls lacrosse team has been one to watch as they continue to be one of the best that the Montgomery program has seen.

The boys golf team has been staying strong this season despite obstacles that threatened to hinder their performance. They have defeated tough teams such as Hillsborough and Watchung Hills in poor weather conditions, showing their strength in any situation.

Coach Joe Bassford expresses his hopes for the team, saying, "Winning our division would be huge, but we still have some work cut out for us. I believe our best golf still awaits us." The boys golf team has been able to achieve success no matter the conditions, and they are sure to be able to work toward their goals and thrive even more.

The boys track team completed their dual meet season with a final record of 4-1-1. They will now continue to compete in championships and larger competitions. They won the division in a three-way tie and hope to be able to win it outright. The runners have had accomplishments in breaking relay records and improving their personal records.

Coach Zoran Milich has seen great success in the team's performances. "Our biggest accomplishment this season has been continuing to improve as a program. We lost some good athletes and leaders from a year ago and we didn't skip a beat. The fact that the boys really care about how well they do is a great accomplishment. It is very hard to break into our top three in each event so that just shows how competitive we have become," Coach Milich stated. The boys still have a long season ahead of them as they approach bigger and more challenging competition; however, they are ready to take on their opponents.

The girls track team has been continuing their season with many great successes as well. They went undefeated in their dual meet record and have continued showing strength in the tournaments following. They placed first in the Somerset County Championship on May 4 and went on to place first again in the Skyland Conference Championship on May 11.

Despite many injured runners, the girls have been stepping up in their performances in order to reach their goals. Coach Jim Goodfriend hopes to send many athletes to states and believes that this will be possible considering the success of the team so far.

The baseball team has had some important wins as well. They beat Ridge 3-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Somerset County Tournament, which gave them a chance to play Rutgers Prep in the semi-final round at the TD Bank Ballpark, home of the Somerset Patriots. Coach Peter Mueller explained, "Offensively, we are getting key hits at key times and our pitch selection is improving. Our goals have been to win a county, conference and state title. As of right now, we still have an opportunity to do all three!" The team consists of many strong athletes that have continued to bring the baseball team to success, showing their ability to end the season strongly.

The softball team has been maintaining a very high status throughout the area. They are currently seeded at number one in the Somerset County Tournament and number one in the Central Jersey Group 4 Tournament, and they successfully beat the number one team in the state in an exciting game on April 27.

Coach John Rooney stated, "We hope to win the conference, county, and section. One goal we have already hit is a 20-win season. Now we are trying to get to the program's win-record of 22 as well as the school record for any team of 24 wins." At the rate that the team is performing so far, these goals should be easy to come across and the softball team is sure to continue their expanding success even more.

The boys tennis team is currently ranked first in the state and has continued to prove their ability to hold that status. They tied Hillsborough in the Somerset County Tournament, making them undefeated thus far. "Mitchell Ren won at second doubles and Justin Chang won at third singles as individual champions and this brought us to the tie in the team competition," Coach John Arnold explained. "Our goal is to win every match we play and learn from every match win or lose. This is a goal that cannot change and also cannot end." The boys tennis team is definitely one to watch as they expand their success even more.

The MHS spring sports teams are having yet another strong season despite the competition of many tough teams in the area. This year's teams are definitely one to watch as they break records, achieve goals, and continue to improve throughout each game.
