Adult Graphic Novels Writers Not Just A Good Old Boys Club Anymore

A recent cursory review of the small, but tasteful adult graphic novel collection at Mary Jacobs Library reveals a startling statistic – less than ten percent of the comics/commix are written by women. It is most curious why that would be, given that there are about as many or more women than men in this country.

Come to the library on July 20 at 7:30 pm to meet local graphic novelist, Jennifer Hayden, author of the forthcoming novel, The Story of My Tits, to be published by Top Shelf and writer of webcomics for the Brooklyn based webcomic collective ACT-I-VATE, and Philadelphian Emily Steinberg, a painter by training and author of webcomic Graphic Therapy: Notes from the Gap Years. Both women write, draw, and illustrate their own comics. They’ll talk about women in the comics field; they’ll talk about and to each other; they’ll talk about their past works and their future works. It will be a fun, even hilarious, evening filled with laughter. Follow these links to get a preview of their works http://www.act-i-vate.com/64.comic and http://www.smithmag.net/graphictherapy .

This program is free and open to the public and is for adults only. We ask that you pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 x4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org . There will be refreshments.

Water Your Mind @ Mary Jacobs Library

. MJL Adult Summer Reading Club (ASRC) sign ups begin on Saturday, June 26th under the big red umbrella at the adult reference desk. In addition to all the great books you’ll get to read and the great prizes you’ll have a chance to win, you’re invited to attend some very stimulating programs.

On July 15th from 7-9, Doris Schwint, illustrator and free-lance artist, will demonstrate how develop a painting using watercolor pencils and then program attendees will get to give it a try. This class is limited to 25 people so pre-registration is mandatory. On July 22nd at 7:30, Kevin Lyon, general manager of the Belle Mead Co-op, will teach us how to build a backyard pond. On July 29th at 7, there will be a screening of the Indian movie Water, the story of the widow Chuyia, who is, at only 8 years old, sent to a home where Hindu widows must spend the rest of their lives in penitence. This film caused riots in India. On August 5th at 7:30, Michele Blane from the Montgomery Shade Tree Committee will fill us in on local watering conditions – the content of the program will depend on what kind of weather conditions we’re having (drought or flooding.) On August 12th at 7:30, Arlene Harms from Creative Hydroponics will discuss growing indoor plants in water, rather than soil. Several hydroponic plants will be given away as door prizes. Please pre-register for these free and open to the public programs by calling 609-924-7073 x4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org .

ASRC is sponsoring a photography contest this summer. The main focus of the photograph must be of water and presented to us both on 8x10 photo paper and as a digital image (email it). The photo can be submitted to us anytime between June 1st and August 14th but it does not need to have been taken during that time period. The photo must be an original work of the submitter. Submitters must be over 16 and eligible to join the ASRC (Somerset County Library cardholder.) Submissions will be displayed in the library until September. On August 19th, a panel of professional and amateur judges will determine the prize winning photos – 1st prize is $50, 2nd prize is $30, and 3rd prize is $20. Any questions about this contest should be referred to Candy at the email above.

We’ll wind the summer reading club up with a party at noon on August 26th. The coveted Flamingo Award for ‘most books read’ will be announced at this party. However, you may continue to submit raffle tickets for the system wide grand drawing through September 7th. We look forward to seeing you this summer.
